Today’s Thought & Question for January 28, 2026: Damn the Torpedoes, Full Speed Ahead

Question of the Day: What choice keeps resurfacing no matter how often you ignore it?

Thought of the Day: Damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead! Admiral David Farragut

__________

Some thoughts arrive gently. This one doesn’t.

Today’s Thought of the Day showed up with a little urgency and no interest in being polite. It’s a line that gets quoted a lot, often for the wrong reasons, and it made me stop and think about how often we confuse waiting with wisdom.

Because sometimes waiting really is the right move. And sometimes it’s just fear wearing a calm expression.

The Question of the Day that goes with it has been sitting with me longer than I expected. It’s not a dramatic question. It doesn’t demand a big, public answer. It just asks you to notice something familiar. A decision that keeps resurfacing no matter how often you push it aside.

You probably already know what it is.

That doesn’t mean you’re ready to act on it. It doesn’t even mean you need to decide today. But there’s something powerful about admitting that a choice isn’t random, and that it hasn’t stuck around by accident.

In today’s reflection, I wrote about the difference between patience and paralysis, about the cost of unresolved decisions, and about the moment when standing still quietly becomes its own kind of risk. Not in a loud, motivational way. Just honestly.

If you want to read it, the full piece is here: Thought of the Day and Question of the Day: Damn the Torpedoes, Full Speed Ahead

As always, thank you for being here. For reading. For thinking. For not rushing past the questions that deserve a little more time.

Question of the Day: What do you always think you’ll remember but never do? Thought of the Day: You ain’t lost until you admit you are. _________ Some days don’t fall apart. They just feel a little off. You forget small things you were sure you’d remember. You stay busy, but not oriented. You keep moving, hoping clarity will catch up to you instead of the other way around. That’s where today’s reflection started. Not with a solution. Not with advice. Just with an honest sentence that landed...

Question of the Day: What is something that used to be easy but is now difficult? Thought of the Day: I would agree with you, but then we’d both be wrong. _________ Some changes announce themselves. Most don’t. They show up quietly. In the background. In the moment you realize something that once took no effort now takes patience. Or planning. Or a deep breath before you begin. We usually joke about those moments first. Humor gives us cover. It lets us acknowledge the shift without fully...

Question of the Day: What words, instead of curse words, do you say in front of children? Thought of the Day: I am to please, but my aim ain’t that good. __________ Most days, I am not trying to impress anyone. I am trying not to make things worse. That is especially true when children are nearby and something unexpected happens. A spill. A loud noise. A frustrating moment that arrives without warning. My brain scrambles, my mouth hesitates, and out comes a phrase that is absolutely not what...
